United in Grace – A Study of 1 Corinthians
The Apostle Paul wrote the letter of 1 Corinthians to address divisions within the church. These were not theological controversies but power struggles between factions within the body of Christ. The church had adopted some of the values of the culture in which it lived, and the resulting dissension compromised its witness and unity. These things were tearing the church apart and needed to be put back in order. So, Paul wrote: “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought” (1 Cor. 1:10). The Christian’s life is not to be based on the cultural or political ideas we embrace but on the grace we have received. Only then will we speak to the world a unified message of God’s love and interact with one another based on the servant-hearted example of Christ.
