A Family Sabbath Outing

This Sunday, we’re inviting all Fifth Kids families to a simple and meaningful Sabbath outing together at the Calvin University Bunker Interpretive Center. This gathering is open-house style, so come whenever it works for your family and stay as long (or as short) as feels right. There’s no schedule to keep and nothing you have to accomplish. Just come as you are.
This is an invitation to practice Sabbath together—to stop, rest, delight, and think about God in the ordinary moments of being outside and being together. Sabbath with children looks different than Sabbath alone. It means following your child’s pace and readiness rather than trying to control the experience. That might look like:
- Walking the trails at your child’s pace
- Stopping to watch a bird or examine a leaf
- Ending the walk when little legs are tired
- Asking curious questions and seeing the world through their eyes
Children have a natural way of noticing things that adults often miss. Sabbath gives us permission to slow down enough to notice with them.
This is also a chance to practice Sabbathing in community. While each family will explore at their own pace, we’ll be sharing the space with other Fifth families—running into friends on the trail, greeting one another along the way, and remembering that we are part of a larger church family learning this rhythm together.
There is no program to follow.
No expectations to meet.
Just an invitation.
An invitation to slow down.
An invitation to be together.
An invitation to notice God’s presence in creation and in one another.
We hope you’ll join us this Sunday at the Bunker Center as we practice Sabbath—
together. Come when you can. Stay as long as you like.
