Lent is a season of preparation and repentance during which we anticipate the events of Good Friday and Easter. Just as we carefully prepare for big events in our personal lives, Lent invites us to make our hearts ready for remembering Jesus’ passion and celebrating Jesus’ resurrection.
We continue our Lenten sermon series, Bread of Life. After fasting for 40 days, Jesus was tempted to turn stones into bread, but he responded: “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone’” (Luke 4:4). This temptation was about more than physical hunger. At its root, it was a temptation to trust in oneself more than God. Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a mustard seed and yeast. In God’s kingdom, small things can become big, and big things can be transformed by the small.
